Email Testing tools
Posted in Email MarketingA week or so ago I was looking for an email testing service that would take an email campaign and send me back screenshots of the email in different email clients (Outlook, Mail, Lotus Notes, etc). I found several and thought I would share.
Here’s my list so far, ranked best to worst:
- Litmus (http://litmusapp.com/email-testing) Cost: Free to $199/mo.
- Campaign Monitor (http://www.campaignmonitor.com/testing) Cost: $5 a test
- MailChimp (http://www.mailchimp.com/add-ons/inboxinspector) Cost: $29 for 3 tests
- LyrisHQ (http://www.lyris.com/solutions/lyris-hq/email-delivery/inbox-snapshot) Cost: $299/mo.
If I missed any or my information is no longer correct, please leave a comment.

…since you asked for comments… Litmus provides a novel approach, however, lacks some table stakes features to make it a market leader. That being said, I think they’ve got a pretty good “37signals-ish” approach to email rendering.
MailChimp and Campaign Monitor resell (via an API) the products from market leaders Return Path (www.returnpath.net) and Pivital Veracity (www.pivitalveracity) Lyris rolled their own rendering tool via an acquisition a few years ago.
While considerabilty more expensive than Litmus, Return Path and Pivital Veracity provide a much more robust set of tools and world-class staff to back it up. If email is your mainstay you want to check those guys out.
However, that’s not to take anything away from the Litmus guys who if I’m not mistaken still have day jobs at other companies.

dotMailer (http://www.dotmailer.co.uk) also have an inbox preview feature which is outsourced to Return Path.
